Banned Ingredients

Diligently researching what's in LOVE GOODLY's products is vitally important because many today contain chemicals that have been linked to health problems. We did the homework on everything here-so you don't have to.

Using resources provided by the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics database, the Pesticide Action Network and Non GMO Project, among others, we created an extensive BANNED LIST ingredients that preclude a product from being on LOVE GOODLY.

1,4 DIOXANE and SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULFATE are found in sudsing products like shampoos, bubble baths, liquid soaps, baby baths-even toothpaste! Unfortunately 1,4 dioxane is a human carcinogen that also occurs when you process harsh products-like sodium lauryl sulfate-with ethylene oxide to create the less harsh sodium laureth sulfate, which also gets you 1,4 dioxane, to boot. We'll avoid all three, thank you very much.

ANTIBACTERIALS like TRICLOSAN and TRICLOCARBAN are pesticides. They're found in soaps, sprays, wipes and-again-even toothpaste, where they're supposed to kill harmful bacteria. Sadly, they also kill good bacteria, have been shown to compromise the human immune system, and are linked to the creation of antibiotic-resistant "superbugs." And according to the FDA, good old hot water and soap works just as well-or better.

BISPHENOL A or BPA is in everything from plastic products to food can linings to cash register receipts, and it messes up your hormones. Avoid it like the plague that it is.

BUTOXYETHANOL is a skin irritant and possible carcinogen that's added to synthetic fragrance. Never. Ever.

ETHYLENEDIAMINETETRACETIC ACID or EDTA stabilizes some cosmetics, but can be toxic.

ETHANOLAMINES or DEA, TEA and MEA are found in personal care products and pharmaceuticals-as well as dry cleaning solvent and paint-and are linked to allergies and hormone disruption, among other health problems.

FORMALDEHYDE causes cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. When compounds like DMDM HYDANTOIN, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA, SODIUM HYDROXYMETHYLGLYCINATE, 2-BROMO-2-NITROPROPANE-1,3 DIOL and QUATERNIUM-15-found in everything from shampoo to baby wash-break down into formaldehyde, they become carcinogenic too. So we banned them all, of course!

HYDROQUINONE lightens the skin, but it's also linked to cancer. And, ironically, it makes the skin darken faster when exposed to the sun.

MERCURY or THIMEROSAL preserves mascara and some over-the-counter pharmaceuticals; unfortunately, it's also a potent neurotoxin that can damage your brain.

METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE and METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE cause skin irritation and allergies, yet they're found in body washes and shampoos. Huh?

MINERAL OIL or LIQUID PARAFFIN, LIQUID PETROLATUM and PARAFFIN OIL is a petroleum byproduct (read: oil) that can cause skin irritation yet is commonly found in baby lotion. Yes, really.

Yes, you need to use sunscreen, but avoid chemical blockers like OXYBENZONE, linked to hormone disruption and skin allergies, and RETINYL PALMITATE, which can increase skin cancer risk.

PARABENS are preservatives found in everything from moisturizer to sunscreen that can disrupt hormones and are linked to reproductive disorders; look for them prefaced by "methyl," "ethyl," "propyl," "butyl" and "isobutyl."

Got fragrance? Most synthetic fragrances contain PHTHALATES-also known as DBP, DEHP, DEP and more-which are reproductive toxins so prevalent in products the CDC found them in 100% of American test subjects.

PROPYLENE GLYCOL and ETHYLENE GLYCOL are used to soften personal care products-they're also found in brake fluid and antifreeze, and have been linked to asthma and allergies.
